Something not working, or a link that didn’t open the right place? Email the developer at support@alireza.app. Elsemap is made by one person, so replies may take a few days.

To help me help you, please include:

  • your iOS version (Settings → General → About);
  • the kind of link: a short link (maps.app.goo.gl/…), a full Google Maps link, or a street address — and how you opened it (share sheet, paste, or Shortcut);
  • what you expected, and what Elsemap showed instead.

Please share only public places — a shop, a landmark, a station — and never your home address or anyone else’s. If the problem link points somewhere private, find a public place nearby that shows the same problem. What you send is handled as described in the Privacy Policy.

Add “Open in Maps” to the share sheet

Elsemap appears in the share sheet as Open in Maps. If you don’t see it the first time:

  1. In Google Maps, Messages, Safari or any other app, tap Share on a link.
  2. Scroll the row of app icons all the way to the end and tap More.
  3. Turn on Open in Maps (Elsemap). You can also drag it nearer the front.

From then on: Share → Open in Maps. Elsemap shows a card with what it found and one button, Open in Apple Maps. “Open in Maps” also appears in the list of actions further down the share sheet; both do the same thing.

Add the ready-made Shortcut

The Shortcut is the one-tap route: once it’s in your share sheet, sharing a Google Maps link opens Apple Maps directly — no card, no second tap.

  1. Open Elsemap and, on the Open tab, tap Add the Shortcut. The Shortcuts app opens; add the “Open in Maps” shortcut.
  2. Next time you share a link, scroll to the end of the action list, tap Edit Actions…, and add Open in Maps to your Favourites.

You can also use the Open in Maps action in any shortcut or automation you build. It takes a link or address, and has an Allow Contacting Google for This Run option, which is off by default, applies to that single run, and can never override a “Never” setting.

Common questions

Why is there one extra tap from the share sheet?

iOS doesn’t let a share sheet extension open another app on its own — it needs you to tap a button. So Elsemap shows what it found with Open in Apple Maps ready to tap. That extra tap is iOS, not us. If you want to skip it, use the ready-made Shortcut, which can open Apple Maps directly.

Why does a short link ask “Contact Google?”

A short link such as maps.app.goo.gl/… doesn’t say where it goes. Only Google knows, so to reveal the place Elsemap has to ask Google to follow the link. Elsemap won’t do that without your say-so: with “Ask me each time” (the default) you choose Allow Once, Always Allow, or Cancel. Occasionally, if following the link doesn’t reveal the exact spot, Elsemap asks a second question, “Read the linked page?”, before making one more request.

Full Google Maps links that include coordinates, and plain street addresses, are read on your device without contacting anyone, so they never ask. If you set short links to “Never”, Elsemap won’t contact Google at all, and short links won’t open.

What do the result labels mean?

Every time Elsemap opens a place, it tells you what kind of result it is, because it doesn’t pretend to be certain:

LabelWhat it means
MatchedElsemap matched the link to a place Apple Maps knows, and opens its place card. (Only when place matching is on.)
You chose thisElsemap found a nearby place that might be the one, asked you, and you picked it.
Street addressElsemap opens the street address that was in the link or text.
Pin from the linkElsemap opens the exact point the link pinned.
ApproximateThe link only carried a map view, not a pin, so the spot is approximate.
SearchThe link had no coordinate, so Elsemap opens a search in Apple Maps instead.

When Apple Maps has a nearby place that might be the one but nothing confirms it, Elsemap asks “Is this the place?” and lets you open that place or the pin instead. Whatever the label, check the place in Apple Maps before relying on it.

Why did a directions link open only one place?

Elsemap opens the destination, not the route. For a directions link with several stops, it opens the last stop and tells you so.

The text I shared had more than one place in it.

Elsemap won’t guess. It asks “Which one?” and lets you pick.

How do I change my settings?

Open Elsemap and go to the Privacy tab. There you can change the three choices you made at first launch: whether to look places up in Apple Maps, what short links should do, and whether to remember places on this device (and for 7 or 30 days).

How do I delete remembered places?

On the Privacy tab, tap Delete Remembered Places, or turn “Remember places” off. Either one erases the “Recently opened” list and everything Elsemap had reused, at once. Remembering places is off unless you turned it on.

Does Elsemap need my location?

No. Elsemap never asks for your location and requests no permissions. When it looks for a place, it searches around the place in the link, not around you.

A link didn’t work. What can I try?

Check that short links aren’t set to “Never” on the Privacy tab, and that you have a connection if the link needs Google. Try copying the link and pasting it into Elsemap. If it still fails, email me with a public example.
